What’s the deal with faux wood?
We get calls all the time from customers wanting an estimate for those “fox” wood blinds; so we’re going to take some time to explain “Faux” wood, pronounced [foh].
What is this stuff really? What is faux wood? What are you asking for when requesting a quote for faux wood blinds or shutters?
Faux wood is not wood at all. Faux wood is the politically correct term used for fake wood, and it can be made of several possible combinations of products. Let’s take a look at a few of those possibilities.
Composite Faux Wood: It’s not completely not wood. (Well that is crystal clear!) Composite blinds are made of sawdust or wood pulp that is glued together and then wrapped with some sort of pvc/polypropylene product, aka plastic.
Faux Wood: Then there’s the 100% plastic stuff, like polyvinyl chloride better known as PVC and polypropylene.
Foam Wood: This is the bottom of the barrel, the crust scraped off the bottom of the vat of polyvinyl chloride polypropylene. Not really, I’m not sure what they put in these things… I’ve heard rumors that it may be recycled milk cartons. Hey, at least you’ll be helping the environment! This is also what some of the off-the-shelf cut-down blinds (that’s a whole different article) are made of that you find at the big box stores. Have you ever wondered why you can go to your favorite discount store and get a whole house full of blinds for under $100? Yep, foam wood. Ever wondered why those blinds turn a nice yellowish brown after about 2.5 hours of direct sunlight? You guessed it – Foam wood.
So the next time you want a quote on “fox” wood blinds, just know that if the product is not made from real wood, then it’s faux.
